Money
Price ranges, what is included and what pushes the number up are all on the cost page. The short version: keeping the layout, choosing standard-size tiles and deciding everything before work starts are the best ways to control the budget.
Time
Most main bathrooms take three to four weeks on site. The biggest delays come from late selections, strata approvals and surprises behind old tiles. The renovation process page lists each stage.
Mould and humidity
Coastal air is damp for much of the year. A properly sized fan ducted outside, sealed or epoxy grout, tiles to the ceiling in the shower and a mould-resistant ceiling finish make a renovated bathroom far easier to keep clean. See waterproofing and tiling.
Old homes
Fibro cottages and older brick homes can hide asbestos, rotten joists and ageing pipes. These are checked at the site visit wherever possible, and anything found later is shown to you and priced before work continues.
Units and strata
Most owners corporations need to approve bathroom work involving waterproofing. Apply early, and check the by-laws for working hours and lift rules.
Approvals
Central Coast Council has been the single council for the whole region since the 2016 merger of the former Gosford and Wyong councils. Internal house renovations generally do not need approval unless structure changes. Heritage items, extensions and structural changes are different.
Design
The most common changes are a walk-in shower instead of a bath-over-shower, a wall-hung vanity, larger tiles and better lighting. See small bathrooms and accessible bathrooms.

Questions people ask before they commit
How much does a bathroom renovation cost on the Central Coast?
As a 2026 guide: main bathroom $20,000 to $34,000, ensuite $15,000 to $26,000, cottage or compact bathroom $14,000 to $23,000, unit bathroom $16,000 to $28,000, and laundry $8,000 to $19,000.
How long will it take?
Roughly three to four weeks on site for a main bathroom once selections are locked in, with smaller rooms often quicker.
Will a renovation fix our mould problem?
If the mould comes from poor ventilation, porous grout or a failed membrane, a renovation addresses all three. A ducted exhaust fan on a timer is the single most important part in a humid coastal home.
Do fibro homes have asbestos?
Homes built or renovated before about 1990 may contain asbestos cement sheeting. It is sampled before demolition and removed by a licensed asbestos removalist if found.
Do I need council approval?
Internal bathroom renovations in a house are generally exempt development if the structure and footprint do not change. Central Coast Council handles approvals for work that does need them. Units need owners corporation approval.
What deposit will I pay?
No more than 10 per cent in NSW. For work over $20,000, home building compensation cover must be in place before a deposit is requested.
